2011 : the year in books

i really should have taken the time to thoroughly review these as soon as i was finished reading them. oh well. this is the seriously pared down version of a real review...
homeruns
* barbara robinson's best christmas pageant ever - 80pgs
    - it doesn't get any better that this story at christmastime; i laugh, i cry, i always ALWAYS enjoy this book
* rhys bowen's molly murphy series - 2630pgs
    - the last illusion was probably my favorite of this series, although i've enjoyed this series as a whole
* rhys bowen's royal spyness series - 1273pgs
    - i really like this series and am excited that there are more books just out and in the works!
* charles finch's charles lenox series - 924pgs
    - i like the setting in this series and i absolutely adore lenox and lady jane but esp mcconnell, that drunken irish (scottish?) character; finch does a great job of never giving up the murderer until the very end
* louise penny's bury your dead - 384pgs
    - inspector gamache - i like that guy, and i liked this book too
* louise rennison's withering tights - 288pgs
    - as if you even have to ask, i LOVED this book; rennison is hilarious and so are her heroines/protagonists...READ THIS!
* kathryn stockett's the help - 451pgs
    - as good as everyone said it was and then some
* dene low's the entomological tales of augustus t percival : petronella saves nearly everyone - 196pgs
    - apparently low has a few other petronella books under her belt, but i cannot find them anywhere; i definitely look forward to reading them when i do find them
* jacqueline winspear's maisie dobbs series - 945pgs
    - while i liked the first in the series, i wasn't too impressed with the subsequent books
* grace lin's where the mountain meets the moon - 278pgs
    - this story was magical and wonderful, a great chinese folktale
* jacqueline kelly's the evolution of calpurnia tate - 340pgs
    - very happy a friend recommended this book; it was a little like a grandfather-granddaughter love story but not at all in a pervy way
* charles todd's inspector rutledge series - 1017pgs
    - i really like the historical/wartime aspects and aftermath of this series
* richard castle's heat wave - 198pgs
    - how could i NOT put this in homeruns? castle is only like #3 on my list of tv boyfriends (after agents dinozzo and booth)
* agatha christie's murder at the vicarage, murder on the links and the secret adversary - 721pgs
    - this lady sure knew what she was doing; secret was my favorite of these three
* martha grimes' the old fox deceiv'd and the man with a load of mischief - 573pgs
    - if my library carried #3 in this series, i would totally continue reading it

hits : single (1), double (2), triple (3) - not included if part of series mentioned above
* (3) ann brashares' sisterhood everlasting - 349pgs
    - this dragged on, but i had to read it after growing up on the series
* (1) madeleine wickham's cocktails for three - 331pgs
    - let's just say i won't be checking out anymore of ms wickham's books
* (3) tina fey's bossy pants - 288pgs
    - i just wished there were less f-words, still funny though
* (2) c alan bradley's a red herring without mustard - 399pgs
    - not my favorite of the flavia series, but i look forward to reading the next one just the same
* (2) michael stanley's a carrion death - 462pgs
    - didn't love it, didn't hate it
* (3) emily griffin's something borrowed - 388pgs
    - an easy summer read; at least it was better than the movie (although i did love john krasinski as ethan)
* (2) barbara kingsolver's the poisonwood bible - 576pgs
    - this book took me for.ev.er to finish, and i would have been okay had i never read it to begin with; everyone ends up bitter and faithless, cheery i know
* (1) beth patillo's jane austen ruined my life - 272pgs
    - i should stop reading books about jane austen fanatics; i don't particularly care for ms austen's own works yet i still keep picking up books about her...weird (although i do like shannon hale's austenland and am excited about the sequel to it)
* (2) laura child's shades of earl grey - 242pgs & death by darjeeling - 242pgs
    - i feel indifferently about the characters in these books, therefore i feel indifferently about the books themselves
* (2) victoria thompson's murder on st mark's place - 277pgs & murder on astor place - 278pgs
    - ditto to above
* geraldine brooks' year of wonders - 308pgs
    - books about the plague = unless historically accurate, not for me; plus, the reverend is a total a-hole (spoiler!)

strikes
* tom rachman's the imperfectionists - first 156pgs
    - i'm pretty sure i won't be trying this out again; too much back and forth, now and then that i had trouble keeping anything or anyone straight; maybe it'd be better if i read it all in one go...?

errors
* jennifer weiner's goodnight nobody - 371pgs
    - boo! first and last of weiner's books that i'll be reading
* agatha christie's parker pyne investigates - first 141pgs
    - i don't dig short stories, esp short story mysteries
* walter mosley's always outnumbered, always outgunned - 1 chapter
    - typically i'm all about writing in the vernacular; i said typically, but not this time
*dashiell hammett's the maltese falcon - 217pgs
    - i should have just watched the movie

scoreboard (in pgs)
15,871
  rpa (read page average, der) 43pgs/day
  down from 49pgs/day last year...wah wah wah
